About The Scheme

The University has arranged with Bupa to offer staff members the BUPA HKU Top-Up Medical Insurance Plan. The voluntary top-up medical insurance plan offers colleagues and/or their dependents the option of obtaining, at their expense, additional medical coverage to supplement the University’s Staff Medical Benefits Scheme at discounted rates. 

The University has arranged with Bupa to offer staff members the BUPA HKU Top-Up Medical Insurance Plan. The voluntary top-up medical insurance plan offers colleagues and/or their dependents the option of obtaining, at their expense, additional medical coverage to supplement the University’s Staff Medical Benefits Scheme at discounted rates. 


Major Features:

  1. It covers the shortfall between the benefits entitlement under the University’s Staff Medical Benefits Scheme and the actual costs of reimbursable hospitalization/medical expenses, up to an overall annual limit of $750,000;
  2. There is an annual deductible of $7,500 for plan 1 and $3,750 for plan 2;
  3. For new members, pre-existing conditions will be covered after a one-year waiting period;
  4. Dependants must enroll at the same time as the staff member unless they are residing or receiving education overseas or they are covered by another medical insurance scheme operated by the spouse’s employer;
  5. Members may transfer to one of Bupa’s individual plans to ensure continued medical coverage upon cessation of their hospitalization coverage at the University

About The Scheme

Eligibility

This top-up medical insurance plan is open to:

StaffAged 18 – 74 years (applicable to university staff members who are under Plan 1 or Plan 2 of Staff Medical Benefits Scheme)
SpouseAged 18 – 74 years
ChildrenAged 15 days – 18 years old, or below 25 years if in full-time education

Application Deadline

New staff members must enroll within one month of joining the University. Late application will not be accepted. The next enrollment date will be within the month of September in the following academic year.
