Catastrophic Insurance
From September 1, 2025 to August 31, 2026
The Policy
Purchased by the University with no enrolment required by staff, AXA provides all appointees (excluding dependents) eligible for hospitalisation benefits with catastrophic insurance.
Catastrophic insurance covers medical expenses of staff members (but not dependants) who are diagnosed with serious illnesses, including all cancers (malignancies) and brain tumours (excluding carcinoma-in-situ), organ transplants and ultra-operations, etc, subject to 90% reimbursement and a deductible of $100,000, which may be covered under the SMBS as appropriate. The additional benefits coverage ranges from $750,000 for Plan 1, $500,000 for Plan 2, and $250,000 for Plan 3.
Reimbursement Procedures and Examples
Medical procedures and expenses authorized by UHS will first be reviewed for reimbursement under the Staff Medical Benefit Scheme (SMBS). UHS will then submit the eligible expense to AXA for reimbursement under Catastrophic insurance and/or Top-Up Medical Insurance, if applicable.
Members are advised to follow the established reimbursement procedures and complete claim forms from UHS and AXA (upon UHS’s notice that their case may fall into Catastrophic Insurance) as appropriate. For more details, please visit:

As a member of catastrophic insurance, during your university service or upon cessation of hospitalization coverage as you depart from the University, you may also enroll into AXA’s individual policy – PortaProtection, for extended coverage at your own costs.
