Top-Up Medical Insurance Plan

About The Plan

The University has arranged with AXA to offer staff members the AXA HKU Top-Up Medical Insurance Plan. The voluntary top-up medical insurance plan offers colleagues and/or their dependents the option of obtaining, at their expense, additional medical coverage to supplement the University’s Staff Medical Benefits Scheme at discounted rates. 

Eligibility

NOTE: Existing BUPA members are not subject to the following age restrictions and may continue to renew their Top-up Plan.

This top-up medical insurance plan is open to:

StaffAged 18 – 69 years (applicable to university staff members who are under Plan 1 or Plan 2 of Staff Medical Benefits Scheme*)
SpouseAged 18 – 69 years
ChildrenAged 14 days – 18 years old, or below 23 years if in full-time education

Staff and dependents must enrol together. Dependents include spouses and dependent children. Newly-wed spouse/ new-born children should be enrolled within 30 days from the date of marriage/birth.

Application Form

The completed application form can be submitted either to AXA or Human Resources Office:

(1) To AXA: Email to AXA at eb.direct@axa.com.hk, along with print screen of bank remittance

(2) To Human Resources Office: By Mail/In person at Room 110, Knowles Building, along with the cheque

Reimbursement Procedures and Examples
Medical procedures and expenses authorized by UHS will first be assessed for reimbursement under the Staff Medical Benefit Scheme (SMBS). Only after SMBS reimbursement has been processed can claims be considered independently by AXA under the Top-up Medical Insurance (if applicable) and Catastrophic Insurance (if applicable).

Members are advised to follow the established reimbursement procedures and complete claim forms from UHS and AXA as appropriate.

The completed application form should be submitted directly to UHS

Note: BUPA will only reimburse medical expenses incurred on or before August 31, 2025,
and colleagues with claims spanning August to September who intend to join AXA’s Top-up Plan
should submit both AXA and BUPA claim forms.

Application Deadline

New staff members must enrol within one month of joining the University. Late application will not be accepted. The next open enrollment period regardless of one’s employment start date will be within the month of September in a new academic year.

Additional Individual Insurance For Current Staff, Leavers and Retirees

During your university service or upon cessation of hospitalization coverage as you depart from the University, you and your dependents may also enroll into AXA’s individual policy – PortaProtection, for extended coverage.
