additional Individual Insurance
For Current Staff, Leavers and Retirees

Additional Individual Insurance Option

During your university service or upon cessation of hospitalization coverage as you depart from the University, you and your dependents may also enroll into AXA’s individual policy – PortaProtection, for extended coverage.

AXA PortaProtection

More information on PortaProtection can be found at https://www.axa.com.hk/en/porta-protection.

Pre-existing Conditions
All pre-existing conditions shall be covered under PortaProtection if you have been continuously insured under a BUPA/AXA group scheme (i.e., Catastrophic Insurance and/or Top-up Medical Insurance) for a total of at least 12 consecutive months.

If you have been insured under the BUPA/AXA group scheme for less than 12 months, you will need to wait 12 months to receive coverage for pre-existing conditions.

For dependants without Top-up Medical Insurance coverage, you may acquire PortaProtection with no pre-existing conditions covered.

Underwriting
As an AXA group scheme (i.e., Catastrophic Insurance and/or Top-up Medical Insurance) member, you may enroll in PortaProtection with no underwriting required unless otherwise requested by AXA. For dependants without Top-up Medical Insurance Plan coverage, simple underwriting is required to acquire PortaProtection.

Age Limit
AXA has offered a limited-time arrangement to extend the maximum entry age to 69 for HKU members interested in joining PortaProtection. All members who may reach age 69 should submit their applications within 30 days before their 69th birthday.

Claim Procedures
As advised by AXA, for a member with active hospitalization benefits offered by the University, PortaProtection should be claimed only after such claims are submitted to the UHS.

Therefore, please submit your claims to the UHS first regardless of whether they are pre-approved by UHS or not. Afterwards, please submit UHS’s rejection reply together with your claims documents to AXA for PortaProtection reimbursement.

For a member who no longer has active university medical benefits, PortaProtection could be the first-claim product.
